Youth Competitive Teams

Our goal is to create an environment for all sailors to learn and enjoy the sport of sailing, and to excel in seamanship while emphasizing discipline, work ethic, commitment and integrity.

420 Race Team

Welcome to the 420 Race Team at SCSEF.  Race Team practices provide a comprehensive training atmosphere for sailors participating in a season long sailing campaign. The sessions will include lessons in boat preparation, teamwork, boat speed, handling, tactics, strategy, weather, and the all-important racing rules.  Sailors will have their skills tracked and evaluated to ensure continuous development.   Time off the water spent reviewing what is learned during practices (strategies, tactics, etc),  and learning the racing rules is necessary.

The Club 420 is a popular two-person boat sailed by thousands of youth sailors across the country. The boat is highly configurable and can accommodate multiple disciplines of sailing. Sailors aging or sizing out of the Optimist will find the Middle/High School Sailing 420 Class a fun and challenging endeavor.

AGES:  13 to 18 typically

ABILITY LEVEL:  Sailors should be strong swimmers, have previous sailing experience, and be comfortable in a 420.

PRACTICES:  Fridays from 4 – 6pm,  Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 4pm.

See our Calendar page for details.

There are additional time commitments for loading/unloading boats and traveling to and from regattas, including an additional regatta coaching fee.  A capable SUV or Truck with a trailer hitch will be very helpful in supporting the logistics of travel to events.

COST:    The season package costs $1,000.   There is a ~25% discount for members.   Note that sailors attending regattas will incur additional costs for registration, travel, accommodations, etc.  Specific details will be worked out at the start of the season.  Please note that once practices start, there are no refunds.

REGATTAS:   Regattas we are planning to attend are listed on our Calendar web page.

Middle/High School Sailing

Welcome to the Middle/High School Sailing Program at SCSEF.   This is an entry level learn to race program focused on learning the fundamental techniques of sailing a small dinghy. Students are able to choose from three types of boats, Sunfish, Laser (ILCA) and 420. Sunfish and Laser are one person boats, while the 420 is a 2 person boat. The classes will cover essential skills such as sail trim, tacking, gybing, and boat handling in various wind conditions.  Emphasis will be placed on safety, understanding the rules of racing, and building confidence on the water. Practices are tailored to meet the needs of sailors who may be new to competition, as well as those that are already experienced. This class offers a mix of on-the-water practices, drills and classroom instruction to help sailors advance their abilities and prepare for competitive sailing.

AGES:  12 to 18 typically

ABILITY LEVEL:   We accept both experienced sailors, and MS/HS youth that are new to sailing.  New students will be paired in a 420 with an experienced sailor as they are learning. They can transition to a Sunfish or Laser after the initial learning phase.

PRACTICES:  Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, from 4:30pm to 7:00pm.

Optional participation in Small Boat Sundays every other week.

See our Calendar page for details.

COST:    There are two ways to signup: by month or as a package for the entire season (spring or fall).  The package costs $725, while a single month costs $300.   There is a ~25% discount for members.  Note that if sailors elect to attend regattas, they will incur additional costs for registration, travel, accommodation, etc.    Please note that once practices start, there are no refunds.
